Hiring a professional comes with a hefty price tag, but luckily, you can perform a chandelier install yourself.
All you need is a little time, patience, and a few tips to give your room a new polished look.
Read on to discover how to install your new chandelier all by yourself in a few simple steps.
Tips for Performing a DIY Chandelier Install
Learning how to install a chandelier at home is simple if you know a thing or two about wiring and electricity. The tips below will help you start.
1. Turn off The Electricity
Before you install a chandelier, you need to turn off the electricity for the circuit the chandelier is on. You can do this from the electrical panel in your home.
Once you’ve turned it off, test the switch in the room. Once you make sure everything is safe, you can start dismounting the existing chandelier to expose the wires.
2. Remove the Old Chandelier
Removing the old chandelier is the second step in installing a new lighting fixture.
Do this carefully so as not to damage the wires and the ceiling wall. Start by removing any detachable parts, as well as the light bulbs.
Unscrew the canopy (the part attached to the ceiling) until you get to the wires.
At this point, you should use a voltage tester to double-check whether the electricity is off.
3. Install the Chandelier’s Electrical Box
If you want to learn how to install a chandelier light fixture properly, you have to study its electrical box.
This is the part that contains the wires that connect to the electrical installation in your home.
First, cut the chandelier’s chain or cable to your desired length. Then, pull around 6-8 inches of cable through the trim ring or electrical box. You need to strip around half an inch off the wires before you attach the fixture.
Depending on the chandelier model, there may be a specific order of installing the parts, so make sure you follow the instruction manual.
4. Connect the Wires
Wiring a chandelier is the final step of completing the installation. You should connect the wires properly for the lighting fixture to work.
Connect matching color wires to each other using a twist-on connector. If the wires are visible, push them inside the electrical box to hide them.
Your new chandelier will come with an instruction manual, so make sure you read it before you complete the installation.
Put light bulbs in and turn the electricity on from the electrical panel. Turn on the light switch in the room to check if the chandelier is working.
